Announcement Regarding 20-21 Spring Break
Dear DPEM Families,

We’ve been so inspired and energized by the start of our school year, especially by our scholars and the enthusiasm they have brought to their classes so far.

We’re writing to inform you of an update to our SY 20-21 calendar. As you may know, the NYC DOE just released their SY 20-21 calendar. After reviewing their calendar, we have decided to shift our Spring Break to align with the NYC DOE, and will therefore be holding Spring Break during the week of March 29th. Aligning our spring break week with the DOE’s will allow for smoother provision of DOE-based services such as busing and meals. We also know that some of you have scholars who attend NYC DOE schools, so we hope that this shift will be helpful so that your children all have spring break at the same time.

Of course, if you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to reach out to me at my contact information below.

Thank you for all that you do.

In partnership,

Katherine Perez

Katherine Perez

Dear DPE Families,
We are committed to building community and ensuring an inclusive and positive school culture.  While we navigate these unique times, we know that in order for scholars to be able to focus on their academic learning, we must also prioritize social-emotional learning (SEL) alongside academics.  We are placing a stronger emphasis on integrating the impact of our current reality into our curriculum and practice to ensure scholars and families have a supportive environment to thrive.
Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. Social-emotional learning provides a foundation for safe and positive learning and enhances students’ ability to succeed in school, careers, and life. Our goal is to partner with you in this priority and build on the foundation that you have already set at home.
All DPE teammates commit to supporting the social-emotional well-being of all scholars–whether in the school building or the remote learning space.  Building a sense of belonging and connection to and with the school community is the foundation of strong school culture.  The three focus areas below describe our prioritized partnerships and social and emotional learning supports in the 2020-2021 school year.
Strong family, scholar, school partnerships:  On-going family-scholar-school communication is a cornerstone of our work together.  We will be in regular contact with families to ensure the school knows what scholars and families need to ensure scholars are set up for success and feel supported by their school community.  As an example, we will gather surveys from individual families to best understand the needs and current context.  We will also hold periodic family town halls for communication and collaboration.
Prioritized time for social-emotional learning: The school schedule reflects dedicated time(s) for social-emotional learning in advisory, town halls, community circles, small groups, and/or targeted touchpoints.  Scholars will be encouraged to bring their full selves into the room to better connect with one another, their teachers, and other members of the school community. Their voices will be honored and heard as they share the stories, experiences, and issues that matter to them. Additionally, these spaces for social-emotional learning infuse an authentic sense of joy and community into the school day to further support scholar engagement during this unique time.  By creating consistent routines and structures for scholars, we are creating support for consistency and predictability at school.
Opportunities for individualized support:  All scholars have unique needs and we are committed to providing opportunities for individualized support academically, behaviorally, and emotionally.  Advisors work closely with grade-level teams and the scholar support team to provide scholars with the support they need including daily academic support blocks, check-ins with social workers and school counselors, and regular opportunities to check-in with staff members to share feedback and additional assistance a student may need.
Thank you as always for your continued partnership and please reach out with any questions or concerns as we launch into this school year together!  If you have additional ideas and feedback on supports we can provide DPE scholars, please reach out to our leadership team:

To be admitted to Zoom classes, scholars will need their name showing in Zoom. Ensuring all scholars names show in Zoom will help us take more accurate attendance and will ensure the privacy of all scholars is protected.
For a scholar’s name to show in Zoom, the name of the device that the scholar is using needs to include the scholar’s name. If scholars are using DPE Chromebooks, the scholars name will automatically show in Zoom. If the scholar is using a personal device and needs support renaming it so that their name shows in Zoom, please complete this tech support survey so we can assist you.
Thank you for your cooperation with this for strong accuracy of attendance and security of Zoom sessions!

Dear NY Families,We know you may have seen Mayor De Blasio’s announcement about pushing back the start of school for all NYC DOE schools until September 21st. This shift has no impact on Democracy Prep and our virtual launch date. We will still be launching our virtual classes on Tuesday, September 8, 2020, and we still plan to launch our hybrid model with in-person instruction 2 days per week (potentially more for scholars in need of significant academic support) on Monday, October 19, 2020.

We will continue to monitor COVID-19 positivity rates and family and scholar concerns in the coming weeks and will keep you abreast of any new developments.

Additionally, our centralized Chromebook distribution event scheduled for tomorrow is going to be postponed due to extremely high demand. We ask that if your scholar still needs a Chromebook that you contact your school’s Operations Manager so they can coordinate with you to pick up a Chromebook as soon as possible so that we can ensure that your scholar is prepared for the start of school.

Thank you so much for your continued partnership. We are so excited to launch a new school year, despite challenges related to this virus. We can’t wait to greet you on social media, in a Zoom Town Hall, or in person at your child’s campus real soon!
